Myron “Mike” W. Klein, a man of remarkable wisdom, resilience, and warmth, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the incredible age of 107. Born in Rochester, New York, Mike lived a life that spanned over a century of history, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and unforgettable memories. He was the Social Chairman of the senior class at Monroe High School which foreshadowed his innumerable friendships, and his gregarious nature throughout the decades. Mike graduated from the University of Rochester with a degree in Physics. After graduate work and a short career at Eastman Kodak, he enlisted in the army. During WWII, he quickly moved from infantry training in the mid-west to the Engineering Research and Development Lab at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He eventually led the team of scientists at the Night Vision Lab where they developed the image intensifier tube that became the basis of modern night vision equipment. His work has saved thousands of military lives and has applications in everyday use today.
After retirement in 1974, Mike moved to Sanibel Island, Florida that he and his wife Evelyn had been visiting since 1968. On Sanibel, he served on the Town Council from 1980-1988, and he was Mayor of Sanibel twice during that time. He was passionate about ceramics (co-founded Sanibel’s BIG ARTS community). Plant and wildlife conservation was in his heart. Mike loved animals great and small. Whether it was protecting burrowing owl habitat or releasing an errant great blue heron from fishing line, he was always ready to save the island’s natural beauty. Mike could often be seen with his wife Evelyn (who he met in the library at the University of Rochester) and pet dogs, Timmy, Jeffrey or Candy walking the beach with their friends.
Mike lived his second life of retirement for the past 30 years at Shell Point Village in Fort Myers, just on the other side of the Sanibel causeway. His passion for pottery and ceramics flourished and made him a sought-after teacher and mentor. He also played a significant role in the care of all the orchids in the Shell Point Greenhouse and was known for participation in many Shell Point activities including friendly games of Rummikub™.
Throughout his 107 years, Myron witnessed the world change in ways few could imagine, meeting every era with grace, a sharp mind, and a generous heart. He was a cornerstone of his family and community, known for his storytelling, occasional bawdy jokes, his enduring work ethic, and his ability to find joy in the simple moments of life. He even spoke fondly of Siri and most recently, Chat GPT!
Myron’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He was devoted to his lovely and gentle wife of 48 years, Evelyn Theis Klein (predeceased, 2001). They had no children. He was also predeceased by his brother Stanley Klein and sister, Doris Silverman. Uncle Mike was the best surrogate father, cherished uncle, and a proud great great-uncle. His presence was a steady anchor for his nieces and nephews including Robert (and Pat) Silverman, Linda (and Jerry) Herman, Andrew Klein, Abby Horowitz (and Herb Bixhorn), Penny (and Jim) Deshur. The lessons of Uncle Mike’s 107 years will continue to teach the next generations that include Elliott, Bennett, David, Erika, Sandy, Mark, Brian, Jenna, Allie, Hannah, and Harris and all of the great-great nieces and nephews as well.
